Assignment 1 - Colour theory

In the first lesson of the period we learned about the use of colours and the different colour theories. The assignment was to take an existing work and apply two different colour vibrations.
For this assignment I chose to redraw this beetle from a photograph.
Reflection
From my previous study I already learned a little bit of colour theory, I really liked diving deeper into it this period. I find it very interesting how colours can influence each other and what type of mood and feeling it can give. It's really magnificent to think that colour has so much impact on the mood of the overall artwork, you can completely change the mood by only changing the colours. Changing the colours wasn't very difficult for me to do but it still amazes me how different the drawings feel.

Assignment 2a - Light basic shapes

Here we had to apply a frontlight and a backlight to the basic shapes.

The sphere and the cube were fairly easy to do if you think logically. The cube was a bit more tricky because on first sight I didn't notice the small gradient on the planes.
I learned to look better at the double shading of an object and to see how the colour of the floor reflected on the object.

Assignment 2b - Light Textures

For the second part of the assignment we had to pick one material and apply it to the basic shapes. As a small beginning exercise I chose to make a boll of glass. A classmate gave me the inspiration to make all the basic shapes with a cloth over it. To me it seemed like a fun and challenging thing to do.
The process of how I made the cloth's. I started with the darkest colours and layered on the lighter ones bit by bit.
Reflection
I have absolutely no regrets in challenging myself into making the different types of cloth over the shapes. The process did take quite some time, especially the shiny sphere, which I had to redo twice. It was the first one I made and the most complex. After making one the other two went a lot quicker because, I knew the process of the previous one. Seeing the details and then applying it to my own work also went easier along the way
Assignment 3 - Realistic Painting

In the third assignment we had to pick a painting made by Roberto Ferri and recreate it as realistic as possible. This is a great exercise to apply the techniques we learned in the previous lessons.
Original                                                                                               Redraw
Reflection

Recreating this drawing took up quite a lot of time and it really challenged me to see how shadings and reflections worked. I found it very relaxing to do. Often it was painfull to see how long a small piece of the drawing took to make but, looking at the  result was definitely motivating me to continue with the rest.
I chose this painting because, I wanted to apply different types of material. In this drawing you have a lot of cloth, feathers from the wings, human skin, hair, concrete wall and the sleeking scale skin of the snakes.

It's fun to see that you begin noticing more and more details around you as you learn more about, light, shading and colour. Even though I already knew and applied certain light and materials in my previous artworks, I can always learn and improve more. I really enjoyed this period and I'm looking forward to learn and experiment even more.
